This training will take place on July 29th & 30th from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

NOTE: This course requires a minimum of 8 attendees. If we do not have the required number by June 1, 2024 we will be canceling this course. Please do NOT make any non-refundable travel arrangements until we have the number of registrations needed.  We will notify you on or before June 3, 2024. 

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a method of communication that supports people in resolving ambivalence and planning behavior change.  Research supports the effectiveness of MI in helping people change a variety of health behaviors. This workshop will utilize presentation and didactic teaching methods, interactive discussion, demonstration and practice to help equip the participants to employ motivational interviewing strategies with clients/patients to support them in making health behavior changes.

This training will provide foundational understanding of motivational interviewing principles as well as opportunities to practice related skills for tobacco treatment.

After completing the course you will receive an email to participate in a course evaluation.  After completing the evaluation you will be able to download a certificate of attendance that will provide 12.0 contact hours.

Course Details

This course is a 2-day in-person training that will cover everything you need to begin or fine-tune your motivational interviewing skills. 

ABSTRACT

This training will provide a foundational understanding of motivational interviewing principles as well as opportunities to practice related skills.

Objectives

  1. List the elements that underlie the spirit of motivational interviewing
  2. Discuss the factors of motivation and the rationale for assessing motivation prior to giving advice, treatment or education
  3. Practice the skills to recognize, elicit and respond to “change talk”
  4. Demonstrate and practice the interpersonal style and strategies for
  • Engaging the patient
  • Responding to “sustain talk” and discord
  • Exploring importance of change
  • Assessing and enhancing self-efficacy
  1. Demonstrate and practice basic motivational interviewing skills

When is the training?

Is this training virtual?

No, this training will take place in person.

How many contact hours (CEUs) do I get for attending this training?

12 Contacts hours/CEUs will be granted from this training. You can download the certificate after completion of the course from the learner dashboard.

If I attend a motivational interviewing (MI) course, will the continuing education hours be approved for 100 percent credit or 50 percent credit towards my Tobacco Treatment Specialist Re-Certification? 

The NDC program approves 100 percent credit for tobacco-focused MI courses. 

Will I receive a full refund if I cancel a course in which I am already enrolled?  

If for any reason a registered participant is unable to participate in the course and needs to cancel the registration, the following will apply:

Cancellation more than 14 days prior will receive a full refund minus a $100 administrative fee. Any cancellations less than 14 day prior to the course will not be refunded.

 

All cancellation requests must be received in writing at the following email address: nped@mayo.edu. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event that the Nicotine Dependence Center Education Program must cancel or postpone this course, we will fully refund the registration fee.
