Cigarettes and Cycles: The Effects of Smoking on Women’s Hormonal, Menstrual and Menopausal Health

Presenter: Jennifer M. Burden, Ph.D., C.T.T.S.

Overview: Due to large scale public health campaigns, in recent decades, U.S. women commonly know their long-term risks for smoking related-illnesses and death.  However, women may not be as aware of the effects smoking has on their current hormonal balance and reproductive system’s functioning.  Resultantly, they are not often aware of the direct role their smoking plays in what can be major daily stressors, including: menstrual, and menopausal discomfort; biochemical caused-emotional imbalance; and reproductive challenges. Patients deserve to know these effects of smoking as it may assist them in making the decision to quit.  It is within the scope of a smoking cessation specialist’s practice to share this information with their patients/clients. This webinar is designed to equip smoking cessation, providers with information and strategies that help them engage female patients in conversation about their hormone specific benefits of quitting smoking.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Describe the effects of cigarette smoking on the female hormonal homeostatic and menstrual cycle.
  • Illuminate the specific effects of cigarette smoking on the physical, biochemical, and emotional experience of menopause.
  • Propose ways to educate and converse with female patients about smoking and their hormonal health as a motivational technique for promoting smoking cessation.
